Whoa.. haven't been here in awhile now have I? MY HOW THINGS HAVE CHANGED.
Here's a short story I wrote while waiting on the bus ride to Atlantic City .. enjoy.
At 4am Rebecca opened her eyes to the vast darkness of her modest-sized bedroom. She turned over ever so slightly as to not disturb her 5lb Yorkshire Terrier who had been the only male to feel the warmth of her bed for the better half of the past year. He laid there so content and drunk with sleepyness that she didn't have the heart to move him, even though she could just feel the inevitable Charlie Horse she was going to get for laying in such an odd position.
Rebecca was unhappy. Although she wasn't sure why. She knew she could have been in a worse position. Just the other day while on the bus, she saw an older homeless man. It broke her heart to see him just sitting there in front of the Associated Supermarket on Lexington Avenue in Spanish Harlem. It was not a sight that she had never seen before, but it was definitely a moment that was burned into her memory forever.
The poor man, had 2 beautiful loyal dogs. Even in the worst of circumstances his companions would never leave his sides. She stared out of the window at this man for a quite a long time. He repositioned himself on the blanket he placed on the uncomfortable pavement. A canine on each side, his shopping cart of his belongings about a foot away. And they all slept. It was probably the saddest thing she had ever seen up close. It was so cold outside that day; she was shivering even though she donned multiple layers and was inside of a heated bus. Staring at that old man under a wool blanket with his 2 beautiful dogs made her want to cry out to anyone that would listen and beg for him.
Rebecca had no idea why this thought came to her mind at such an odd time. This had to have happened at least 2 weeks ago! She grabbed Kane and squeezed him awake. She placed him underneath her quilt and on her pillow as if he were a live Teddy bear. The poor dog had no idea why he was disturbed from his sleep but he just rolled up into another ball of fluff and knocked out again. Rebecca liked his care free attitude. And she especially like that he didn't ask questions.
Why couldn't all men be this way?
